Few architectural styles match the drama and imaginative design possibilities of log home construction. While there are endless options in determining the design and craftsmanship based on log sizes, corners, joinery, beamwork, textures, detailing and finishes, Square Peg Builders constructs custom homes and structures in following three highly specialized construction/component classifications.
The Round Log has been used in the construction of homes since the days of the first settlers. Today, many homeowners feel the classic round is the profile that best captures the spirit of log home living. Based on other construction factors and the look that the owner desires, there are a variety of methods available in the ways the logs are joined together (from scribing to tongue and groove).
The Square Log method is also known as the chink-style log home. The large square logs, milled to varying thicknesses from the heart of tree, are joined by a structurally-proven interlocking double tongue and groove system. The chinking material between the logs (for superior air-flow resistance), as well as the traditional dove-tail corner system, gives these structures their distinctive appearance.
Timber Frame Homes are homes in which the structure of the house is supported using timber frame beam joinery instead of conventional stick framing. Joinery can include wall structure, joists, trusses and roof members. Owners can choose either full timber frame homes or hybrid timber frame homes (use of both timber frame elements and log walls). Homes can also be designed as post and beam structures which are similar to timber frame homes, but which use logs rather than timber beams.
